- Surveys, this is when a large amount of people answer the same questions either online or in person to get a collective response.
- Observations, this can include counting the amount of time something happens, such as how many red cars are seen from the high street in 45 minuets
- Secondary data, for example company accounts.
Advantages:
- Quantitative research let you study a wider range of topics.
- It usually is more reliable and accurate due to the many cases and fewer variables.
- Often the research that is taken place can be recreated in order to be analysed and compared with other studies.
- Any personal bias can be averted.
Disadvantages:
- Because the results are always in numerical form it is a much more limited answer, due to the lack of description the results are always not very detailed.
- They research is carried out in laboratory conditions so the results may differ to a real world situation. This could potentially decrease the accuracy.
- Quantitative can often lead to structural bias. This is when the results reflect the view of them instead of the participant.
Qualitative Research: It is any sort of research that does not include numbers or mathematical analysis. The research often involves words, pictures and observations.
- Interviews, theses can take place in many different structures, but are usually a one on one session in which questions are asked to find an outcome.
- Focus groups, this is when more than one person talk about a subject and answer questions to gain a collective result.
- Secondary data, this could include diary entries or written notes of past events.
- Observations, this will be conducted under a certain condition to watch how something unfurls.
Advantages:
- Theses results will always be detailed due to the analysis of behavior, feelings and opinions.
- It helps people give opinions on topics that were not necessarily considered.
- A detailed response can be developed by the participants because of there individual experiences.
- It helps to avoid any pre-judgement and explain why any specific responses were given.
- It is more time consuming while also not having as many people studied. This is because usually budget does not allow for the amount of staff and equipment that is needed.
- Some results can be very subjective meaning that they are difficult to compare systematically.
- Because less people are studied it makes it much more difficult to generalize the results.

RESEARCH THE NATURE AND PURPOSE OF RESEARCH IN THE MEDIA INDUSTRY
There are three main type of research in the media industry, audience research, product research and market research. Each of them have different purposes. The first type of research that I am going to discuss is market research, this is when you look at your competitors products and analyse weather there is a gap in the market for the genre or type of production you are putting out into the world. Furthermore, when carrying out market research you can find out the cost and how you are going to distribute it. This can be done by looking at your rivals production and taking into consideration the reviews, both good and bad. Any of the good reviews they should take and potentially get inspiration from them and any of the bad review they should take into consideration and try to avoid making the mistakes there competitors made. All of this is done to make sure that your production is better than your rivals. The next type of research I am going to discuss is audience research, that is when you attempt to find out more about your target audience in order to make a production that is tailored perfectly for them. You can do this by finding out opinions on earlier cuts, poster and sound track ideas. You can find out this information by creating questionnaires, focus groups, surveys and interviews. There are three types of audience research, Geo demographic, ethanol graphic and socioeconomic. Geo demographic audience research is
The final type of research is product research, this is when you will find out all of the information about the price of the product, how you are going to create it, how much money it is going to cost the company in comparison to how much profit it will make the company. The way you can do this is by looking a similar productions and how they were made, how much profit the production brought in and how they managed to distribute it.
